Just aguess, but I'll bet your duct work has gotten wet at one time or another, either due to condensation caused by the insulation around the duct coming off and winter heat condensating in the ductwork (just like a glass of cold water forms condensation in warm weather) and causing mildew or just a plain old roof leak dripping in.
