  29. ISRAEL/SOUTH LEBANON:  Over 400 Palestinians 
  30.  
  31.  Amnesty International is seriously concerned at the situation of over
  32. 400 Palestinian deportees currently stranded in an area between the
  33. "security zone", controlled by Israel with its allied militia the South
  34. Lebanon Army (SLA), and the rest of Lebanon.  Most of the
  35. deportees are suspected by the Israeli authorities of being members of
  36. the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) which claimed responsibility
  37. for the killing of an Israeli Border Policeman last week.
  38.  
  39. The deportees are reported to have tried this morning to enter the
  40. "security zone" on their way back to Israel but to have stopped when
  41. the SLA opened fire in their direction.  Amjad Zamel, one of the
  42. deportees, was wounded and is said to have been taken to hospital in
  43. territory under Lebanese army control.  The Israeli authorities have
  44. stated they do not intend to allow them back, although the Israeli
  45. High Court of Justice is currently examining a petition to allow the
  46. deportees back.  The Lebanese authorities have stated they do not
  47. intend to allow the deportees into the territory under their control.
  48.  
  49. Amnesty International is reiterating its call to the Israeli authorities to
  50. allow the Palestinian deportees to return safely to Israel.  If any are
  51. suspected of committing an offence, they should be charged and given
  52. a prompt and fair trial, or be released. 
  53.  
  54. Amnesty International is also calling on Israel and the SLA to ensure
  55. that the Palestinian deportees are not harmed and are allowed safe
  56. passage through the "security zone" into Israel.  At the same time, the
  57. deportees should be given protection by the Lebanese authorities if
  58. they seek it.   Amnesty International has condemned the killing of
  59. Sergeant-Major Nissim Toledano, the Israeli Border Policeman taken
  60. hostage in Israel and then killed by Hamas.  It had called on Hamas
  61. not to ill-treat him or execute him and to release him as he was held
  62. as a hostage.  It had also called on the Israeli authorities not to
  63. retaliate against the killing of Nissim Toledano by summarily deporting
  64. hundreds of Palestinians.

  70. - calling on the Israeli authorities to ensure that the Palestinian
  71. deportees are allowed to return safely to Israel;

  74. harm the deportees and to allow them safe passage back to Israel;

  76. - stressing that Amnesty International condemns the killing of the
  77. Israeli Border Policeman but urging the Israeli authorities not to
  78. commit human rights violations in response to such abuses.
