- Brief excerpts from "Who We Are", p. 17 in the 1991 catalog:
- ============================================================
-
- "This is a strange business we have, guided in many ways by the
- headlines of the day. For the past 16 years we've been producing
- progressive fundraising items sold mostly to grassroots groups and
- individuals. We carry products espousing a large assortment of
- progressive issues, believing that they are all connected. [...]
-
- "We are often asked, "What exactly is Donnelly/Colt?" Sounding too
- much like a corporate entity, let us put the record straight. We began
- 16 years ago, two people making a living from waitressing and cleaning
- films, who wanted to incorporate our progressive politics with our
- love of graphics. We started small and have grown slowly to printing
- 65,000 of these catalogs this year. We still work out of our basement,
- but hopefully by next year we will build a new building in the
- beautiful but economically depressed countryside of northeastern
- Connecticut.
-
- "[...] People often tell us we should computerize and grow. But, we're
- basically a couple of Luddites (with a Fax machine) who missed the
- computer age and still believe small is beautiful. We're trying to
- ease ourselves into computers, but there always seems something more
- pressing to do.
-
- "We do not take credit cards. We know this is hard for some of our
- customers to understand. But, in order to take them we would have to
- raise our prices to cover the money taken by the bank, as well as the
- extra accounting time we'd need to deal with them. And, frankly, we
- haven't had that much luck finding banks who really want our account,
- neither have a lot of our customers who want to get credit cards.
- Sorry for the inconvenience; it just doesn't seem to anyone's
- advantage to make the banks richer. We can send your order C.O.D. if
- you need to phone or fax it in to us.
-
- "[...] Last year was the first catalogue printed on recycled paper.
- [..] each ton of recycled paper prevents the creation of 60 pounds of
- air pollutants and saves 17 trees, 7,000 gallons of water and enough
- energy to power the average home for six months. This catalogue used 5
- tons of recycled paper.[..] Most of our products are union-made. We
- feel it is extremely important [...]
-
- Finally, we'd like to share with you the privileged position we feel
- we're in. The progressive movement changes from year to year. We go
- through periods of great public protest, followed by times of seeming
- inactivity. We hear from many people a feeling of distress as to the
- lack of action. But from where we are, things seem very different. We
- receive hundreds of orders weekly from peace and social justice groups
- around the country and the world who are organizing in their own
- communities. [...]
