-
- The Model 20 was first offered as a promotional product to a limited
- number of geographies in Q1. Because of the strong and positive customer
- response to this promotion, we are now expanding the Model 20
- offering and making it available to all, *worldwide*. The Model 20
- gives you the opportunity to offer customers a SPARCstation 10
- immediately and at an attractive price.
-
- The Model 20 has a 33MHz CPU with approximately 10% slower benchmark
- performance than a Model 30 at a 10% lower price. This performance is still
- approximately 2 times the performance of a SPARCstation 2. The system is
- fully capable of being upgraded to 40MHz and faster systems including MP.
-
- A customer desiring a SPARCstation 10 Model 41 will pay a lower price
- for the combination of the Model 20 system plus an upgrade module than
- buying a Model 41 (savings: $2,000). Additionally, the customer gets
- the benefit of using a SPARCstation 10 right away.
-
- Upgrades to the Model 20 are also available. Customers who own a Sun-3 or
- Sun-386i system can upgrade to Model 20 via a full system swap.

-
- QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS
- ---------------------
-
- Q: Is the Model 20 any different from a Model 30?
-
- A: The Model 20 is NO DIFFERENT from a Model 30 EXCEPT:
-
- o Model 20 uses a 33MHz SuperSPARC processor (36MHz for Model 30);
- therefore benchmark performance is about 10% slower.
-
- o Model 20 DOES NOT support high end graphics (GXplus, GS or GT)
- SBus cards. These cards are supported once the system is upgraded
- to a Model 41 or faster.
-
- o Model 20 has some ISDN limitations:
- When using ISDN *AND* high-end audio together, 44.1KHz and 48KHz
- audio are NOT supported. These capabilities are supported when
- the system is upgraded to Model 41 or faster.
-
- The same SBus card limitations as on SPARCstation 10 Model 30 apply
- to the Model 20.
-
-
- Q: What does it take to upgrade from a Model 20 to a Model 41?
-
- A: Order UG-M20-M41;
- Upgrading to a Model 41 is as simple as moving a jumper and swapping
- the CPU (MBus) module. The Model 20 motherboard has two crystals:
- one 33MHz and one 40MHz crystal. Moving the jumper simply selects the
- appropriate crystal. It is worth noting that except for one crystal,
- the Model 20 and Model 30 motherboards are identical.
-
- Once the system is upgraded, it can accomodate faster modules which
- we will be continually introducing for the system.
-
- Note that the upgrade Order Number (UG-M20-M41) is different from
- the order number used during the Q1 promotion, all Model 20 customers
- should now upgrade to Model 41 using UG-M20-M41. Orders currently under
- the previous Order Number (UG-M30-41) are OK and do not need to be
- rebooked.
-
-
- Q: Can a Model 20 be upgraded to a Model 30?
-
- A: No. You can however upgrade to Model 41 or faster.
-
-
- Q: How long will the Model 20 stay in the SPARCstation 10 product family?
-
- A: The Model 20 is a regular product. It now joins the Model 30 and Model 41
- as a member of the SPARCstation 10 Product Family. In the future, Model
- 41s will be replaced by a faster module (most likely the Model 51), and
- when that happens, Model 41s will replace the Model 30s, and so on, in a
- "trickle-down" fashion.
-
-
- Q: Is there an upgrade path for the SPARCstation 10 Model 20 from
- Sun 3 and 386i's?
-
- A: Yes, full system upgrades are available for our Sun 3 and 386i customers.
-
-
- Q: Is a country kit required when ordering the full system upgrades?
-
- A: Yes, when ordering any of the 3 upgrades, order the applicable
- country kit at no charge.
-
-
- Q: Which parts of the Sun3 and 386i must be returned to Sun
- after upgrading?
-
- A: The chassis, with CPU board and memory, and the monitor must
- be returned.
