-
- POSITIONING
- -----------
- - Compute server:
- The SPARCcenter 2000 Series is an ideal multi-stream compute server with
- unmatched performance scalability up to 20 processors, SMCC's highest
- throughput system bus technology (XDBus system bus), and memory
- expandability up to 5 GB. It is a great compute server for massive
- simulations or large financial models.
-
- - Database server
- The SPARCcenter 2000 Series will be Sun's premier database server,
- with capacity matching systems availble anywhere, at unprecedented low
- prices. The SPARCcenter 2000 Series was designed to provide optimal
- database performance in client-server configurations. This includes
- configurations in which user terminals are connected to "front-end
- processors" such as SPARCstation(TM) 10 systems and ethernet-based terminal
- servers.
-
- - File Server
- The SPARCcenter 2000 Series will typically be used as a fileserver in mixed
- environments, where the system's enormous compute and database capacities
- are also being utilized. Sun's mid-range and desktop servers also
- provide an excellent value for dedicated fileservice.
-
- - Multiuser server
- The SPARCcenter 2000 Series has the capacity to handle a large number of
- users. Most timeshare users utilizing client-server technology enjoy optimal
- performance and price-performance by the use of multiple servers, sharing
- data via NFS(R). Sun's mid-range and desktop servers also provide an
- excellent fit for multiuser where appropriate.
-
-
- OPERATING SYSTEM
- """"""""""""""""
- The SPARCcenter 2000 Series will ship in volume with a future release
- of Solaris 2.X. Solaris 2.X preserves binary compatibility with
- earlier Solaris 2.X versions and with Solaris 1.X.
-
-
- SERVICE
- """""""
- SunService 2000--a new, customized support program--has been developed
- specifically for supporting the SPARCcenter 2000 Series in demanding
- business computing environments. It offers a full spectrum of services
- in a single package and guarantees *99% up-time* on the SPARCcenter
- 2000 Series. Geographies, in addition to the US, which will provide
- this program will be determined in February.
-
-
- UPGRADES
- """"""""
- SMCC will provide enclosure upgrades to the SPARCcenter 2000 Series from the
- SPARCserver 390, SPARCserver 490, and SPARCserver 690MP. Disk upgrades
- from IPI to differential SCSI will also be available.
-
-
- LEASING
- """""""
- An innovative, new leasing program will be available in the U.S. when
- SPARCcenter 2000 Series begins shipping. SunLease(TM) features a
- 1-800 hotline, preferred customer status with pre-set credit approvals,
- quick and easy ordering, and operating leases that make it very simple to
- add-on modules or upgrade modules in original lease.
-
-
- AVAILABILITY
- """"""""""""
- SMCC is announcing the full 20-way system today; however, the SPARCcenter
- 2000 Series will be released for shipment in rolling phases. The first phase
- consists of up to an 8-CPU, 2.5GB, 138GB maximum system configuration.
- Volume shipments for the first release phase will commence April 1993.
- Details on later phases is forthcoming.
-
- Prior to volume shipments, SMCC will be shipping limited quantities of
- systems via an early access program called "Earlybird."
-
-
- US PRICING AND ORDERING INSTRUCTIONS
- ------------------------------------
-
- ORDERING
-
- To order a system:
- 1) Choose a base system package. Each base system consists of one system
- board, 2 SuperSPARC processors, 2 x 2.1GB disks in a disk tray, a 5GB
- 8mm tape, a CD-ROM, a FSBE/S (fast SCSI and buffered Ethernet card) and
- a DSBE/S (differential SCSI and buffered Ethernet card) in a data
- center cabinet. There are six different base system packages--each
- package offers a different combination of memory.
-
- 2) If the customer wants more CPU or memory capacity than the base system
- packages provide, order one of the eight system board options. The
- system board options provide a variety of different CPU and memory
- combinations. Some boards are CPU-less to provide customers with a
- way to expand memory-only or SBus-only.
-
- 3) Choose additional CPUs, memory, disk, tape, SBus cards, and monitor as
- necessary to build the customers' desired system.
-
-
- CONFIGURATION NOTES
-
- - All systems include an unlimited user license for a later release of
- Solaris 2.x.
-
- - A maximum of 5 (out of a possible 10) system boards per system are
- supported during the first release phase--four system boards with 2
- SuperSPARC processors each and one system board for additional I/O and
- memory expansion.
