  229. HARDWARE & SOFTWARE CONSIDERATIONS

  231.  
  232. NeWSprinter 20 works only on SPARC systems with SBus (SPARCstation IPC,
  233. SPARCstation IPX, SPARCstation 1, SPARCstation 1+, SPARCstation 2,
  234. SPARCstation 10, SPARCserver(TM) 630MP, SPARCserver 670MP and
  235. SPARCserver 690MP) running any of the Solaris 1.x operating systems.
  236.  
  237. NeWSprint 2.1 software is based on OpenWindows Version 3.  Users can
  238. also take advantage of terminal-based installation and operation.
  239. NeWSprint software utilizes between 6.5 MB and 21.5 MB of disk space
  240. depending on the choice of software modules.  For adequate spooling and
  241. page image storage with NeWSprinter 20, an additional 8 MB of disk
  242. space is also required.  NeWSprint requires a minimum of 12 MB of RAM
  243. and double that in swap space.  A SunCD(TM) drive is required to
  244. install the NeWSprint software.
  245.  
  246. Note:  During NeWSprinter 20 installation, your customer will need to call
  247.        1-800-USA-4-SUN to obtain their NeWSprint software password.
  248.  
  249. One License Required Per Printer
  250. --------------------------------
  251. A NeWSprint license is required for EACH printer you attach and use
  252. with NeWSprint software, but not every workstation.  This is enforced
  253. with a password keyed off the hostid.  Users are instructed how to get
  254. passwords as part of the installation procedure.  Once a printer is
  255. licensed, the license cannot be transferred to another printer without
  256. authorization from Sun.

  258. **Solaris 2.1 or later Compatibility
  259. ------------------------------------
  260. The Solaris 2.1 or later operating system release is not yet supported
  261. by NeWSprint software or NeWSprinter 20; however, any computer on the
  262. network, including any Solaris 2.1 or later based system, can send
  263. PostScript or UNIX(R) print jobs to the SPARCstation system to which
  264. NeWSprinter 20 is attached.

  298. This new version of NeWSprint software, NeWSprint version 2.1, adds
  299. printing features specific to the NeWSprinter 20.  The only other
  300. changes to NeWSprint software are bug fixes reported since the Version
  301. 2.0 release.

  304. to the new version of NeWSprint software is available.  For more

  308. **Special Software Upgrade:  NeWSprint 2.5 for Solaris 2.1 or later

  361.     NeWSprinter 20 is the newest member of the Sun printing family.  
  362.     NeWSprinter 20's large-format printing, higher speed and duty cycle 
  363.     are designed specifically to meet the needs of larger workgroups of 5-20 
  364.     users.  SPARCprinter will continue to be sold as the solution for smaller
  365.     workgroups (2-8 users) or personal printing applications that require
  366.     only A/A4 printing at a lower duty cycle.

  368.     NeWSprinter 20's B/A3 format is perfect for the majority of Sun technical
  369.     applications such as CAD/CAM/CAE, or for desktop and electronic
  370.     publishing where "tabloid" paper sizes are a must.

  372. Q:  The SPARCprinter laser printer has worked well when attached to user
  373.     SPARCstation systems where customers also run desktop applications.  What
  374.     about NeWSprinter 20?
  375. A:  This depends on the SPARCstation model, configuration and user work load.
  376.     For SPARCstation 10s, you should feel comfortable placing a NeWSprinter 20 
  377.     directly on a user's workstation in most situations.
  378.  
  379.     For other SPARCstation systems, you should be aware that NeWSprinter 20's
  380.     high speed and memory requirements may compromise the user's desktop
  381.     application performance.  Therefore, be sure to carefully evaluate
  382.     customer expectations, desktop workload, configuration, and estimated
  383.     printing loads before making an attachment recommendation.  When in
  384.     doubt, recommend a print server attachment for the NeWSprinter 20.

  387. Q:  I know that the NeWSprinter 20 SBus card is NOT the same one used with the
  388.     SPARCprinter laser printer.  Will they conflict if being used in the same
  389.     print server?
  390. A:  No, both SBus cards are single-slot devices that have been designed and 
  391.     tested to work together and drive printers simultaneously.  However, if 
  392.     your customer is using an existing printer driven off the parallel port 
  393.     on a SPARCprinter SBus card (or the X1130A option), they must still install 
  394.     NeWSprinter 20's SBus card.
