- The lines you are pointing to are put in there by the gating software. To
- send a message to Leah on the fidonet side, you simply address it to Leah
- Wesolowski, and her address is 1:373/2. Huntsville is in zone one, hence
- the "1:". Basically zone one coresponds to North America. Huntsville is
- network 373, and the machine she is using is node 2. Currently there are
- 20,000+ systems in fidonet, divided up into six zones, and god knows how
- many networks. In 1986 there were fewer than 1000 systems, and that's the
- time that my machine came online. Obviously the message formats are quite
- different, with the fidonet side using far less routing and control lines,
- since the messages are transmitted by PRIVATE INDIVIDUALS and not by
- companies. Long distance can be expensive, even at the current 14.4
- kilobaud transmission rates. On the fidonet side, doing as so many on the
- Intergraph side do and cross-posting messages in multiple newsgroups is
- considered to be in VERY POOR TASTE. Unfortunately, despite my requests,
- the people at Intergraph feel compelled to do so, hence the recent spate of
- messages from the Netherlands on our presidential election showing up in
- our LOCAL newsgroup. You should see all the lines of routing garbage the
- gateway software puts at the top of every message gated from the Intergraph
- side. Personally, as moderator of this newsgroup on the fidonet side, I'm
- about ready to sever the gate. On the fidonet side, signature files are
- also considered to be in very poor taste, as is the common practice of
- quoting a message (including all routing and header information) in its
- entirety simply to add a one line comment. Some software on this side even
- limits you to only quoting four lines at a time to discourage this habit.
