- The attached is an invitation for you to participate in the
- "balloting" of the IEEE P1295.2 standard. This standard uses
- the OPEN LOOK Intrinsics Toolkit (OLIT) as base technology.
-
- If you are interested, please note that the deadline for
- joining the balloting group is January 11, 1993.

-
- Dear Colleague,
-
- The IEEE P1295.2 working group invites your participation in the
- review and approval of the Open Toolkit Environment standard.
- P1295.2 is a standards working group of the Institute of Electrical and
- Electronics Engineers (IEEE). The group is sponsored by the IEEE
- Computer Society's Standards Activities Board to produce The IEEE Open
- Toolkit Environment Standard.
-
- The ballot group for the P1295.2 Open Toolkit Environment is now
- being formed. To be a voting member on the ballot group, you must be a
- member of the IEEE or the Computer Society. If you are not currently an
- IEEE or Computer Society member, you still have two options for
- participation. You can become a voting member of the ballot group by
- joining the Computer Society at the same time you join the ballot
- group. To do so, submit a Computer Society membership form and the
- appropriate membership fee or a copy of the membership form (if the fee
- was previously sent) along with the ballot group form and mail to the
- address on the Balloting invitation.
-
- Alternatively, you can participate as a "party of interest."
- Parties of interest cannot vote for the acceptance or rejection of the
- standard. However, their objections, if any, will be
- addressed by the ballot resolution group. To join the ballot group as
- a "party of interest," submit the enclosed ballot form, indicating that
- you want to participate in the P1295.2 ballot. The deadline for
- submitting these forms to the IEEE is January 11, 1993. (Note that
- this is the date of receipt at the IEEE office, not a postmark date.)
-
- It is currently expected that the draft IEEE Open Toolkit
- Environment Standard will be mailed to the members of the ballot group
- and registered parties of interest in February, 1993. Ballot group
- members will have 30 days to review the document and complete their
- objections and comments. Any objections must be accompanied by specific
- reference to the document text,
- an explanation of the objection, and a proposed rewording of the
- text. If necessary, the document will be revised to address the
- objections and then recirculated to the ballot group for additional
- review.
-
- The working group expects the draft standard will consist of
- approximately 450 pages. Other documents that will be included with
- the ballot draft are:
- - OPENLOOK Graphical User Interface Functional Specification
- Addison Wesley ISBN 0-201-52365-5
- - Mouseless Specification
- Reference documents with which you are expected to be familiar, but are
- not included with the ballot draft:
- - Xlib Reference Manual
- O'Reilly & Associates, Inc ISBM: 0-927175-13-7
- - X Toolkit Intrinsics Reference Manual
- O'Reilly & Associates, Inc ISBM: 0-937175-58-7
-
- The IEEE P1295.2 working group looks forward to your participation
- in the balloting process for this standard. If you have any questions
- about the P1295.2 working group, contact Chairman David Bealby by
- calling 415 336-5585 (email: david.bealby@eng.sun.com). If you have
- questions about joining the ballot group, contact Anne O'Neill at the
- IEEE by calling 908 562-3809.

- Sincerely
-
- Bill Brown

- RETURN DEADLINE: 11 January 1993
-
- SCOPE: To define a graphical user interface environment that is based
- on but not constrained by the OPEN LOOK Graphical User Interface

- developed by IEEE 1201.2 and an informative annex will be provided
- detailing discrepancies, if any.
