- NeXT adminstration guide says that it's impossible to use a NeXT without
- Netinfo. I find it very unfortunate, since I really want to be able to do
- things from remote hosts or even dialup. GUI in /NextAdmin doesn't run well
- over a dialup line, of course. Moreover, I find it rather confusing when good
- old system files like /etc/passwd or /etc/services are completely ignored and
- UNIX programs that are supposed to change them have no effect.
-
- Anyway, I decided to check if it's really impossible to leave without NetInfo.
- I commented out a few lines in /etc/rc that start NetInfo daemons and nothing
- horrible happened. However I did notice a few gotchas:
-
- - npd (network printer daemon) complains and dies if it can't find it's
- favourite netinfo. I guess it's fine since this machine doesn't have a printer
- anyway. However, if I remove npd from rc, NeXT will go single-user mode after
- rc - despite exit 0 in the end of it. Why???
-
- - I can't get DNS to work. /etc/resolv.conf is silently ignored. Actually, I
- never got it to work with netinfo as well. Anyone knows what is the matter?
-
- - I get a message from login window about netinfo being dead every time a user
- logs out. Why would it need netinfo? Is there a simple way to make it happy?
