  49.     Maintenance Update (#1) for Version 3.0.1 of the INTERACTIVE

  53.     This  first   Maintenance   Update   from   SunSoft   for
  54.     INTERACTIVE  UNIX System V/386 Release 3.2, Version 3.0.1 is a
  55.     new way of updating the quality of the software  and keeping
  56.     it  in  sync  with  new  available hardware.  It contains a
  57.     number of bug fixes, updates the  Korn  shell, and
  58.     incorporates  additional  hardware  support.   We currently
  59.     plan to issue new Maintenance Updates every 3 months.

  61.     This Update supports reading a  1.44 Mb diskette  on  a system
  62.     configured  with  a  2.88 Mb diskette drive.  A separate Boot
  63.     diskette  is  supplied  for  this  purpose.  Note  that  the
  64.     system will not accept 2.88 Mb diskettes, but only 1.44 Mb and
  65.     720 KB diskettes in 2.88 Mb drives.

  143.     INTERACTIVE UNIX System Version 4.0 Preview Kit
  144.     ===============================================

  146.     INTERACTIVE UNIX System V/386 Release 3.2, Version 4.0 is
  147.      a full-featured, new version of the product scheduled for
  148.      the spring of 1993.  
  149.  
  150.     Because of customer demand, however, key functionality is 
  151.     being made available via the Preview Kit.
  152.  
  153.     Although called  Preview  Kit, the  software  has  been fully
  154.     tested and is supported by SunSoft. It is installable on top of
  155.     and is only to be used with Version 3.0.1 of the INTERACTIVE
  156.     UNIX Operating System.

  163.     - New device drivers
  164.  
  165.     The Preview Kit contains a new device driver for an IBM MCA
  166.     Token Ring card.

  168.     - itimer driver

  170.     When  installed,  this  driver  gives  the   system   the
  171.     capability  to  send  signals  at  intervals  of  several
  172.     milliseconds, as on BSD systems, rather than full seconds as is
  173.     the case on UNIX System V Release 3.2.

  175.     - Long file name support and symbolic links
  176.  
  177.     This modified version of the S5 file  system  allows  for the
  178.     creation  of files with names that can be as long as 512
  179.     characters, instead of 14.  Symbolic links  are  also
  180.     supported,  which  makes  it possible to assign different path
  181.     names to a single file, even  across  file  systems.  Where
  182.     necessary, certain UNIX System utilities have been modified to
  183.     support these features properly.  The addition of these
  184.     features also leads to improved interoperability with Solaris
  185.     systems and many other operating systems which already support
  186.     these features.

  188.     - Support for more than 16 MB on ISA machines
  189.  
  190.     Personal computers with the AT Bus architecture (usually
  191.     referred  to  as ISA machines) have a DMA controller that
  192.     supports 24-bit addressing.  This translates  into  being able
  193.     to  only address 16Mb of memory.  Many of these machines today
  194.     are capable of supporting more than 16Mb of memory (often up to
  195.     32Mb or more).  A  major  software  enhancement was made to be
  196.     able to support ISA machines with up to 256Mb of memory. It is
  197.     recommended  that this software be installed only on ISA
  198.     machines that indeed have more than 16Mb of memory.
