  51.     Maintenance Update (#1) for Version 3.0.1 of the INTERACTIVE

  55.     This  first   Maintenance   Update   from   SunSoft   for
  56.     INTERACTIVE  UNIX System V/386 Release 3.2, Version 3.0.1 is a
  57.     new way of updating the quality of the software  and keeping
  58.     it  in  sync  with  new  available hardware.  It contains a
  59.     number of bug fixes, updates the  Korn  shell, and
  60.     incorporates  additional  hardware  support.   We currently
  61.     plan to issue new Maintenance Updates every 3 months.

  63.     This Update supports reading a  1.44 Mb diskette  on  a system
  64.     configured  with  a  2.88 Mb diskette drive.  A separate Boot
  65.     diskette  is  supplied  for  this  purpose.  Note  that  the
  66.     system will not accept 2.88 Mb diskettes, but only 1.44 Mb and
  67.     720 KB diskettes in 2.88 Mb drives.

  145.     INTERACTIVE UNIX System Version 4.0 Preview Kit
  146.     ===============================================

  148.     INTERACTIVE UNIX System V/386 Release 3.2, Version 4.0 is
  149.      a full-featured, new version of the product scheduled for
  150.      the spring of 1993.  
  151.  
  152.     Because of customer demand, however, key functionality is 
  153.     being made available via the Preview Kit.
  154.  
  155.     Although called  Preview  Kit, the  software  has  been fully
  156.     tested and is supported by SunSoft. It is installable on top of
  157.     and is only to be used with Version 3.0.1 of the INTERACTIVE
  158.     UNIX Operating System.

  165.     - New device drivers
  166.  
  167.     The Preview Kit contains a new device driver for an IBM MCA
  168.     Token Ring card.

  170.     - itimer driver

  172.     When  installed,  this  driver  gives  the   system   the
  173.     capability  to  send  signals  at  intervals  of  several
  174.     milliseconds, as on BSD systems, rather than full seconds as is
  175.     the case on UNIX System V Release 3.2.

  177.     - Long file name support and symbolic links
  178.  
  179.     This modified version of the S5 file  system  allows  for the
  180.     creation  of files with names that can be as long as 512
  181.     characters, instead of 14.  Symbolic links  are  also
  182.     supported,  which  makes  it possible to assign different path
  183.     names to a single file, even  across  file  systems.  Where
  184.     necessary, certain UNIX System utilities have been modified to
  185.     support these features properly.  The addition of these
  186.     features also leads to improved interoperability with Solaris
  187.     systems and many other operating systems which already support
  188.     these features.

  190.     - Support for more than 16 MB on ISA machines
  191.  
  192.     Personal computers with the AT Bus architecture (usually
  193.     referred  to  as ISA machines) have a DMA controller that
  194.     supports 24-bit addressing.  This translates  into  being able
  195.     to  only address 16Mb of memory.  Many of these machines today
  196.     are capable of supporting more than 16Mb of memory (often up to
  197.     32Mb or more).  A  major  software  enhancement was made to be
  198.     able to support ISA machines with up to 256Mb of memory. It is
  199.     recommended  that this software be installed only on ISA
  200.     machines that indeed have more than 16Mb of memory.
