- Yup. For example, 68K-based HP machines may have a longer life than
- 68K-based Sun machines did, but I suspect HP likes HP-PA more than the
- 68K architecture, and that the most interesting HP-UX machines will, in
- the future, be PA machines rather than 68K machines.
-
- It should not really matter what HP, Sun, or Dec likes. What really matters is
- what the customer wants/needs. Any customers that do not want to make a
- complete architecture switch from 68K machines were screwed by sun and not
- by HP. Not everyone needs a 50MIPS workstation. 68040 machines are quite
- capable for many customers. It really boils down to $$$$. And cost is more than
- the price of the next box that comes out.
-
- I would bet that long ago if Sun had licensed a third party to produce new SUN3
- architecture machines, there would still be SUN3 machines. But of course that
- is totally counter to their product strategy.
