- Sorry, Leonard, but I've got a sour taste after using SOS myself.
-
- Here's the history:
-
- Trackball on 180 freezes after returning from sleep mode. You can make this
- repeat if you try it at least 10 times and/or let the machine sleep for at
- least 4 minutes.
-
- SOS 1: Sent to SOSAPPL, they shipped it back on the assigned day. Bad news:
- they didn't fix anything, it still had the problem. There was no note
- indicating that they actually did anything to the unit. There was a mysterious
- printed circuit card (which I later found out was a 2 MB memory card) enclosed
- in the box.
-
- So I call back. This time the representative still wants me to replace the
- entire system software yet again. Instead of doing so, I take the short cut
- and boot from disk tools - still get a mouse freeze.
-
- SOS 2: Send the unit back. Because the Airborne guy came at the precise half
- hour where I had to pick up my kids (my wife is on jury duty), the box got
- picked up without an airbill placed on it. Took them 2 weeks to find it.
- Anyway, last Monday the rep said that they found it and are working on it
- and should go out late today (Monday). Didn't get a package on Tuesday, so
- call back Wednesday - same story - rep said that they're working on it and
- it should go out today. Got a call that morning from the original rep, said
- the problem was an extension in the system folder. Didn't he realize that
- I booted from Disk Tools and still got the problem?? Noooo. They ship the
- unit back and it seizes up on the 4th sleep. However, they did manage to
- scratch a nice gouge in my otherwise pristine screen.
-
- Net result: SOSAPPL keeps my machine for 4 weeks total and doesn't do a
- damn thing to fix it, except scratch the screen which doesn't seem to help
- any.
-
- Note: in case you still think that this is software, I also backed up and
- reformatted the hard drive, in case it was in some driver that lived on
- the disk and got loaded in a startup. Still freezes.
-
- Am I disgusted? You betcha! I'll see if there's an alternative to this
- so-called service when I call SOS monday. Otherwise, they seem to be in
- a great hurry to get things back, but don't take a minimum amount of time
- to see if they actually fixed the problem. Net result: You may just be
- deprived of your powerbook for a period of time without getting it repaired.

-
- P.S. This SOSAPPL seems so out of character for Apple, who, in other regards,
- seems to take a genuine interest in the consumer.
