- The First Ever Clam and Craft Cookbook is a 105k Demo that gives you a little
- taste of what this huge Hypercard Program is all about. It is a clam
- cookbook,
- a Clamkin coloring book, a Clamkin story book, a clam reference book, a

- Subject: [*] cp/obiwan-400.hqx
-
- ObiWan 4.0.0 is a general help system. You can create several
- databses and ObiWan will let you rapidly find information from
- them. It displays the information by temporarily taking over
- several lines at the bottom of the main screen, so the information
- can be displayed at any time in any program. Portions of the
- information can then be sent to the front window as if you had
- typed it. The main use of all this is to access the programming
- database created from Apple's PInterfacesHelp file, which includes
- the procedures, traps, global variables and errors available up
- to System 7. If you've seen Online Companion, it works similar
- to that, but includes all the System 7 information.
-
- I am currenttly trying to license the PInterfaceHelp file from Apple,
- until I do that, you'll need to have you're own copy of it to generate
- the database. I was going to wait until I had licensed that to release
- it, but its nearly a year old now, and I wanted to get it released before
- its birthday. You can also create other databses, for example I
- have a thesaurus which is neat for checking the spelling of words
- (when I can be bothered :-).
-
- ObiWan should work in either System 6 or System 7, and doesn't take
- up much memory. It does use a lot of disk space for the databse
- (the System 7 "force" database is around 720k, but you'll need a few
- meg to create it from the PInterfacesHelp file).
-
- Any programmer with a meg of disk space available and access to
- the PInterfacesHelp file should definitely have a look at this (IMNVHO :-).
- The normal use is to figure out the parameters of various calls, for
- example, if I want to know the parameters for HOpen, I can get them
- like this:
- OSErr:=HOpen(vRefNum_INTEGER,dirID_LONGINT,fileName_Str255,
- permission_SignedByte,VAR_refNum_INTEGER);
- (that took seven key presses: cmd-` to open ObiWan, "hopen",
- cmd-shift-enter to find it and type it in above).
-
- ObiWan is free.
-
- I hope it proves as useful to you as it does to me,
- Peter.

-
- CONTACTS+ is a Filemaker Pro (version 1.x) database. It's main
- purpose is to allow proper address details to appear (even
- when some components of the address are omitted such as the
- organization, country etc...) in Microsoft Word print-merge
- documents. Other than that, you should find that CONTACTS+ is
- just about as powerful and usable as any other `commercial'
- Contacts database/manager.
-
- Docu+ is a document manager. It is used in conjunction with
- Contacts+ v 1.4 or higher. You can create and store simple
- 1 page documents in Docu+ and then use the MiniLetter helper
- facility in Contacts+ to access the text stored in Docu+
- to create print-merge (1 page only) letters.
-
- Plea: If you feel that CONTACTS+ or Docu+ has some useful
- value, & want to encourage ME to improve CONTACTS+ and develop
- other `affordable & useful' databases, & want to receive future

-
- Enhancements since 1.1: Lots of them, though you will probably care most

- This is an update for my Mac version of the famous puzzle game Sokoban.
- It is the game where you push bags of gold (or whatever) in order to

- mouse support as well as the standard keyboard support.
-
- 50 levels are built into the game, and 35 more are in an external module.

- Well actually this problem happens to me quite a few times and I DON'T have

- monitor, the internal video automatically reverts to B&W. Not very
- thoughtful, but since it's not a daily, or even weekly occurance I didn't
- bother with any of it. But here's a suggestion that might work. And then
- again it might not...
-
- In any case, get a utility such as Now MultiMaster in the old 3.0 version
- (and I guess Now Menus in the 4.0.1 version) or a shareware program called
- Apollo. Both of these and probably others allow you to set a monitor depth
- for indiviual programs for switching on the run. All you have to do is set
- the `Finder' program to have a certain depth. Upon startup, the utility
- will automatically switch to the desired bit depth, in theory. Anyway try
- it and tell me how it works. Btw Apollo, while an excellent utility may be
- slightly buggy with other exotic extensions. Hence it has disappeared from
- my startup.

- StuffIT Lite supersedes StuffIT Classic (Classic 1.6 can create and
- expand Deluxe 2.x archives while Lite creates and expands Deluxe 3.x
- archives--and expands Compact Pro as well as all StuffIT formats).
-
- Gad, the conspiratorial view of developers. I don't work for, nor have

- they've always been VERY nice to me. StuffIT Lite has SIGNIFICANTLY
- more features than StuffIT Classic (1.5.1 or 1.6). If you send in the
- shareware fee, the registered version adds features the 'trial' version
- doesn't have. StuffIT Deluxe has even more bells & whistles (SpaceSaver
- and Magic Menu ship with it, for example) and delivers sufficient value
- on it's own to justify buying it (if you choose to buy StuffIT Deluxe 3

-
-
- Until I added RAM to my PB 170 (making adding AutoDoubler more
- practical), I used the Internal Compressor on everything in sight. I've
- also used in heavily on my Quadra's extensions and control panels as
- well as those on the IIci at the office. The compressor reports that a
- number of things are already compressed as tight as they're going to go,
- and for one reason or another declines to compress a few other things,
- but I've not any problems with a single thing I've compressed.
-
- Reformatting a hard drive often works but usually is a more drastic
- solution than the original problem calls for. I use a lot of startup
- items, but not everything possible. It sounds like you found one (maybe
- more) that doesn't like being compressed. Simply replacing the
- miscreants might have worked as well and taken less time.
-
- >Then, in for I think unrelated causes, my external 105 meg drive
- >died in a big way and could not be recovered by Norton Utilities
- >because of course FileSaver was not turned on (it conflicts with
- >AutoDoubler).
-
- FileSaver does NOT conflict with AutoDoubler (many of us run both). If
- AutoDoubler finds lots of things to compress, it creates enough
- temporary files that FileSaver's tracking tends to fill with AD
- temporary documents, and I've read reports that if FileSaver is used to
- recover a compressed document it loses the Type and Creator information
- and the document typically can't be expanded (I'm not really sure about
- that one because it seems pretty easy to confuse files with AD temporary
- documents that aren't really meant to be recovered). I've rarely had
- occasion to depend on FileSaver, but it's worked fine in the few
- instances where I've had need of it. FileSaver is in no way an
- alternative to keeping current backups. I'm considering buying Fifth
- Generations Public Utilities, which reportedly works well with that same
- company's AutoDoubler.
-
- There are some limitations to using ANY of the compression utilities.
- Most of us find the alternative of spending big bucks for a twice as
- large hard drive an even larger impediment. From what I've been
- reading, Mac Stac (February) may be a more satisfactory solution;
- however, it might turn out to suffer at least some of the flaws
- associated with Times Two (incompatibility with disk recovery utilities
- which want to substitute their own driver when directories are damaged,
- for example).

-
- NO, NO, NO! UU-Lite will assign whatever creator/type that it is told to
- assign. If you are sure that it is a MSWord 4.0 file then set UU-Lite to
- assign that creator/type (MSWD/WDBN if I remember correctly) to the file.
- You do this by selecting "Change Creator/Type" from the "Special Menu" and
- then selecting any MSWord 4.0 file from the Standard File Selection Dialog.
- UU-Lite will display the creator/type of the example file and you then
- confirm that it is the correct type. Once you have set the creator/type to
- MSWord 4.0 then convert the QuickMail message using UU-Lite and you will have
- a file with MSWord 4.0 creator/type. If it really is a MSWord 4.0 file then
- just open and read. If its not, well good luck.

-
- Before folks get too excited about the Elek-Tek price mentioned digest 310,
- they should be aware that Elek-Tek is an authorized HP dealer. One of the
- ways they stay in HP's good graces as a dealer is by not selling printers
- themselves outside their district (which was the state of Illinois as of
- a year or so ago). I haven't tried to buy a printer from them all that
- recently, but I'd doubt their policy has changed. Lucky for me if I want to
- buy one from them, my sister lives a couple miles from one of their stores.
-
- Elek-Tek has pretty good prices on a lot of stuff, including HP supplies
- (which they can sell mail order). Their service is also pretty good, but the
- only returns allowed are for exchange of DOA stuff.

- Indeed. That's the main reason I opted for a PB 170 instead of the 140.
- I DO like the active matrix display, but it IS a luxury. At present
- there's NO portable FPU Mac option that doesn't impose the requirement

- Subject: Network Advice
-
- Hello Netters,
- Here's a little something to chew on between bouts with the Christmas
- turkey.
-
- We are getting ready to set up a departmental network and, not being a
- network guru (except by default here), I would welcome a few opinions.
- (By the way this is a little long, please bear with me.)
-
- Background:
- We have 8 Sun workstations networked together (TCP/IP, Ethernet). To this
- network, we want to add 15-20 PC's and 3 Macs (for us I-would-rather-die-
- than-give-up-my-Mac types), all running on one cable.
-
- What we want:
- - The ability to transfer files between the platforms.
- - The ability to share printer resources on the PC's.
- - The ability to send email between the platforms and to the internet.
-
- What we don't need:
- - The ability to use PC resources from the UNIX boxes.
-
- What we are planning so far:
- - We will install Novell, which pretty much takes care of the PC
- side, early in February.
- - We will install the something (probably also Novell) to handle the
- Mac side at some later date (find-the-funds syndrome).
-
- I know this sounds a lot like a PC or Novell question but before anyone
- gets the urge to flame me, let me just say that it is the Macintosh part
- of the whole thing that is causing my headaches. We are dealing with a
- Novell handler here that has little experience with heterogeneous nets and
- even less with Macs. His suggestion was to install cc:mail because it runs
- on Macs and PCs and has a (expensive) gateway to SMTP and UNIX.
-
- At first this sounded good. Then I checked out the MacUser reveiw of email
- packages from earlier this year and found out that I would need AppleShare
- software to run cc:mail on the Macs, thus effectively driving the per seat
- cost to well over several hundred dollars!
-
- We are desperately trying to find alternative scenarios before our dealer
- has to go out and order the software. We have looked at QuickMail (then
- we would have to add at least one of the Macs in the intitial installation
- which was not planned) or Chameleon from NetManager, Inc. which takes care
- of the PC email to UNIX side but leaves me wondering what to use on the
- Macs.
-
- What I looking for (finally):
- - Any suggestions on possible configurations for this mess.
- o Do I teach the Mac users how to log onto UNIX with Telnet to read
- their email?
- o Anything out there that talks to Chameleon on the PC?
- o etc. etc.
-
- Thanks for putting up with the verbosity here, but since I won't be around
- to answer email until after New Years, I figured I would give you as much
- info as possible.
-
- You can reply direct, I will summarize if anyone else is interested.
- Thanks.

-
- I got the 1.3 Network Installer today, and I've a question about the
- new Network control panel. The popup menu (1) vibrates, and (2) does
- not seem to work. It shows the first (alpha order) zone on the campus
- ethernet (AOE Zone), and the box changes width continually. When I pop
- the menu, I can select the right zone (Twilight Zone), but the menu
- box vibrates for a second and then returns to showing the AOE Zone.
-
- I decided that wasn't a great idea and overlaid the Version 3.0 Network
- control panel with the one that came with the System 7.1 disks.
-
- Environment: Asante MacCon3 Nubus card, basic System 7 file sharing. I
- did an "easy install" from the 1.3 installer disk. That doubtless wiped

- Apple's HD SC Setup is minimal formatting software. There are no
- noncommercial utilities that I'm aware of that will put multiple HFS

-
- However, do not despair. You really can have more than one System

- With Apple HD SC Setup you can see some information about the HD.
- Click Partitions and then click Custom and then click Details. There is
- usually unused space on hard drives; you will see gray space in the bottom
- of your partition map with the size to the left if you click the Details
- button. You can use SilverLining to increase the partition size on an
- Apple HD SC formatted drive without either installing SilverLining or
- reinitializing (so I've heard...) (I prefer to keep my Apple drives
- Apple-formatted). If you dont have SilverLining and are willing to

- you can use this unused space. Open Apple HD SC Setup, Click Partition,
- Select your main Macintosh volume and delete it, then click and drag

- The only list of creators and types that I've ever seen is in appendix B in

-
- Greetings From Nacogdoches--
-
- I'm having a bit of trouble and thought some of you folks might have an
- answer--
-
- Trying to make remote LocalTalk net connections (both single user dial-in
- and net-to net) using a Shiva Telebridge and Supra 144 v.32bis modems.
- Most of the time, the connection works at the 57.5k rate ( as expected).
- However, it is not 100% reliable. A "noticable" number of times, I cannot
- establish a connection. The only way I have found to make it work again is
- to reprogram BOTH modems.
-
- Currently, during this testing phase, this is not a problem since the
- modems are within 100ft of each other. This will become a problem once
- they are placed in their remote locations :-)
-
- Apparently, somthing is changing the settings--or I don't have exactly the
- correct ones (most likely the case...).
-
- Anyone have a suggestion ?

-
- Don't blame the system software (either 7.0 or 7.1). Programmers who
- religiously followed Apple's programming guidelines developed software
- on a Mac Plus that runs just fine on a Quadra 950 or a Duo 230. I've
- got some 1987 programs that are 32-bit clean, '040 cache compatible, and
- run just dandy under 7.1.
-
- I suspect that it's not too hard to overlook some detail in the
- guidelines (ask anyone whose had to send betaware through a dozen
- revisions), but it's the software that deliberately tries to bypass some
- guideline (versions of Excel that address the FPU directly, for example)
- that breaks when Apple ships new hardware, new ROM code, or new System
- software. The whole point of the programming guidelines is that Apple
- offers NO guarantee that violating programs will work with future
- hardware and software. Oddly enough, the 1987 Mac II patch of MacinTalk
- witch is NO LONGER supported software (anyone writing software should
- NOT count on it) works fine under 7.1 and in 32-bit mode on a Quadra.

-
- (apologies for the mangling, but he certainly never GIVETH!)
-
- Just my $.02 on Andrew Tobias' TaxCut for the Mac, 'cuz I just received
- the Headstart Edition (they misplaced my original order). It's been
- available for DOS systems for a few years, and this is the first Mac
- version put out. They only have New York and California State versions
- so far.
-
- Anyway, I just tried it out, and it seems to be extremely easy to use.
- The main user mode involves an 'interview' procedure, which requires
- simple yes/no or typed answers. The program chooses questions based
- on previous answers to figure out which forms you need. The interview
- can be exited and re-entered at will. The program also allows you to
- go directly to the relevant forms and type in values directly. It also
- allows for estimated entries (shown in italics) for approximate values
- that aren't finalized yet. It also has a variety of data import formats
- (e.g., MacInTax, DOS/Windows versions of TaxCut, Quicken, and MYM), but I
- haven't used any of these. Of course, you can file electronically too.
-
- Overall, it seems to make tax preparation almost fun(!) as long as you
- don't dwell on the fact that all of those neat dialogs, worksheets, and
- informative blurbs are all there for the purpose of taking $$$ from your
- wallet. During the interview, there are comments on what 'typical' responses
- are, and the impact they may have on your return. Additional help is
- available as well. It even has a 'what if' function that lets you compare
- alternative scenarios (e.g., filing jointly vs. separately, for those
- afloat in marital bliss).
-
- These are my initial impressions along with a feature summary. TaxCut is
- available directly from MECA Software, Inc., and is only about $30. The
- price seems to be a bargain, considering the efforts and general tax-based
- grief that can be avoided. The phone # for orders/inquiries is
- 1-800-288-6322.
-
- I am not affiliated with MECA, or Andrew Tobias, or anything else like that.
- I'm just a new user relating my positive impressions of this program. Of
- course, your mileage may vary.

- On Tue, 15 Dec 1992 09:56:45 EST you said:

- >of a 25 mhz!
-
- "Market driven" implies giving customers what they want. WE are NOT the
- market! The "market" wants 486 (because it's the latest isn't it) never
- mind that its a castrated SX without a cache or an FPU and as many
- megahertz as can be afforded, never mind that a 25 MHz 32-bit system
- will deliver about the same performance as a 50 MHz ISA (16 bit) system
- (what's a bus?). The "market" thinks a 486SX 50/25 with an ISA bus with
- 4 MBytes of RAM running Windows is faster than a Quadra 700.
-
- Most MeSsy DOS boxes do not have FPU's so even DOS software that will
- take advantage of one if it's there is written for systems without
- coprocessors and the vast majority of customers are happy campers.
- Apple is only doing what's necessary to compete effectively in a market
- that puts 99% of its importance weight on a few features and otherwise
- seeks the lowest possible price.
-
- >So, HARUMPH! I am starting to seriously think about Windows NT on an alpha,
- >which will be non-crippled hardware and on OS designed by Dave Cutler, who
- >hails from DEC; a company that knows about REAL computers, not crippled
- >consumer "niche" products.
-
- The Amiga of the late 1990's. That is, the Triumph (DEC Alpha PC) is
- beginning to look more like vanquished. Virtually all developers are
- betting that NT will be so late that the Pentium will have swamped the
- market before the Alpha is ready to ship. Hence, as is the case with
- the Amiga, you're likely to end up with superior hardware for which
- serious software and third-party support will be extremely limited :-(

-
- ....
-
- The equation editor in Word 5 is usually in Math mode (by default). In math
- mode, it tries to interpret what you type as mathematics (i.e. variables,
- operators, and so on). It has rules for interpreting what is a math symbol,
- what is a function, and so on. Traditional math typesetting uses certain
- typestyles and spacing options for and between elements, and the editor tries
- to interpret what you are typing. Try typing "sinx" and the editor gives
- "sin x", because as soon as you finish "sin", it changes the "sin" to normal
- non-italic text and adds an extra space because there should be a space
- between
- the function and its variable.
-
- My guess would be to try putting the editor into "text" mode when you need the
- special symbol. If you don't know how to do this, read the manual. It is short
- and sweet, and goes more into how the math mode works.
-
- Another option would be to try the formula feature (see the glossaries folder
- for ducumentation) and let Word typeset the equations for you. I recently did
- my thesis using the formula glossary, and it worked fairly well, once I set up
- my own modified formula glossary, with my personal preferences. If the
- equations are very complicated, then this may not be a good option.
-
- Hope this helps. John A.
