- I am planning to upgrade a 80386 computer system to a 486. The
- current system is using DOS 5.0 and Microsoft Windows 3.1. In the near
- future, I am planning to use Windows NT and some version of UNIX.
-
- I am having a tough time in deciding which 486 motherboard to
- buy. I have more or less decided on a few features. The feature that
- is most important to me is that I want the motherboard to be a name
- brand, i.e Mylex, Micronics, etc. The following are some of the name
- brands, which also includes their respective price:
-
- UMC 486-33 256K cache EISA ; 778
- Opti 486-33 256K cch EISA local bus; 805
- Micronics 486-33 256K cache EISA ; 979
- Mylex 486-33 256K cache EISA ; 979
-
- If you had experience in any of the above motherboards, I would
- appreciate it if you can give me some feedback. Please note, I am
- planning to install the new motherboard in an AT case. Its not a
- tower case. So, the installation is also important to me. I want the
- motherboard to fit correctly.
-
- Also, I was kind of wondering why there is a tremendous difference
- in price between the Micronics 486-50 EISA and the Mylex 486-50 EISA.
- Is there a big difference between Local Bus and EISA?
-
- I've heard that Local Bus works well with software that deals
- extensively with graphics, i.e CAD programs. Is this true?
-
- Mylex 486-50 256K cache EISA ; 1188
- Micronics 486-50 256K EISA Local ; 1488
