- Say what?!?!?!?
-
- Please explain why you think having many varieties is a mark against
- an operating system, particularly one for which there already exist
- both binary and API standards.
-
- Are you saying it doesn't make sense from a techical standpoint, or
- from a marketing perspective? If the latter, then I'll leave you to
- your statement, since I'm not about to get into a marketing debate,
- and from a marketing perspective, you may very well be right,
- considering the amount of propoganda being slung about. If instead
- you mean the former, then I respectfully submit that you don't have a
- clue what you're talking about (perhaps the marketing dudes have
- filled you with mis-information!).
-
- From a technical perspective, your statement must be the biggest, and
- most aggravating myth surrounding the entire discussion of UNIX in the
- commercial marketplace!
-
- UNIX is technically quite impressive (in part) *because* there are
- many varieties, yet most are source-code compatible, and some are even
- binary compatible. Should I mention that there are even full clones
- of UNIX which also maintain binary compatability on some specific
- platforms?
-
- If you count "varieties" as being those versions which are primarily
- different because they run on different platforms, then I don't think
- we have anything to discuss, period. Unfortunately, many marketing
- folks seem to pull this argument out of thin air and put it forth as a
- primary reason for avoiding UNIX. Talk about mis-information! "Long
- live proprietary systems!!!!"
