-
- IMHO, not exactly a catch-22, since I've heard no one discuss the real
- reason an OS gains popularity: Packaged software.
-
- OS'es (and hardware for that matter) almost don't matter. Very few people
- buy an OS because of its technical ability or its price. People buy it
- for what it allows them to do. This almost always boils down to
- packaged software. Since UNIX has virtually none, I believe it just doesn't
- matter what you charge.
-
- Why was the Apple ][ successful ? Visicalc!
-
- Why was the IBM PC successful ? Lotus 123!
-
- Does this belong in misc.invest or comp.religion ? Dunno, but (IMHO)
- unless Novell uses USL to provide an opportunity to sell packaged UNIX
- software, they may have dumped $360M down a hole. Frankly, SCO's success
- at this strategy hasn't been overwhelming.
