-
- Keep in mind that Novell have a large investment in 'Univel' (merger of
- NetWare
- and Unix SVR4) and are somewhat annoyed with Microsoft (re: Windows for
- Workgroups
- and NT). Univel should have major advantages over the LAN Manager for Unix
- product
- that NetWare/X couldn't achieve because of the limitations of Unix. In the
- final
- analysis Unix _isn't_ a realtime OS, it's a time sharing system, and
- applications
- like a file server (that want absolute priority for machine resources) are
- less
- than optimal when ported to standard Unix. Univel should be able to address
- this problem by changing Unix to meet NetWare's requirements.
-
- When combined with the imminent NetWare release 4 (competing with LAN Manager
- for OS/2), NetWare Lite (competing with W4W peer networking) and the rumored
- Windows-clone coming from Novell/DR (competing with Windows products) this
- would
- put Novell in the position of being able to fight for market share with
- Microsoft
- acroos the board. It's a dirty job, but somebody's got to do it.
-
- In addition, AT&T's disvestiture of USL is inline with their recent withdrawl
- from direct control of Unix. This began with the spinoff of USL as a separate
- company and the history of Unix International and the evolution of SVR4 as a
- non-proprietary ("open") OS.
-
- Does Unix need USL? The answer depends on your definition of Unix. If you mean
- the product trademarked by UI then the answer might be yes, but if you mean
- the family of systems ranging from minix and linux through BSD, SCO, SVRn and
- OSF then the answer is obviously no. Generic unix passed the point of critical
- mass long ago and will continue to stumble along regardless of the fate of any
- single organization or corporation.
