- As I have posted in earlier messages, I too have been having
- MANY problems getting IDE hard drives to work in either the A1200 or
- A4000. Namely the problem is large files becoming corrupt. I have been
- working on this for HOURS and HOURS over several weeks. I think I may
- have found a fix (temporarily, at least!).
-
- I have been playing around with the MASK and MAX. TRANSFER numbers
- trying to get a reasonable combination of performance and reiability.
-
- The standard mask under FFS is 0x7ffffffe. The V39 FFS uses 0xfffffffe.
- Setting this to 0xfffffffc helps but still is not reliable. Going down
- to 0xfffffffa is 100% reliable but SLOWWWW! Try this combination which,
- on my (loaner!) A4000 with a second hard drive just LOVES!
-
- 1. Set the drive partition to be Fast File System (not Custom FS)
- 2. Save the changes to the hard drive
- 3. Format the partition
- 4. Go back into HDToolbox, select the drive and partition, click
- Advanced Options
- 5. Click on 'Change...'
- 6. Set the Mask to 0xfffffffc
- 7. Set the Max. Transfer to 0xff11
- 8. Save the changes to the hard drive
- 9. Exit HDToolbox
- 10. Reboot your system
-
- Hopefully this will solve any problems you have. I have not tried
- every possible combination, nor have I had the chance to try this on an
- A1200. I basically found something that a) worked and b) had decent
- performance.
-
- I would not fiddle with the Mask, but if you have lots and lots of time
- to kill, try different Max. Transfer numbers. Also, I didn't bother
- with File Sys. Identifier 0x444f5303 (theA1200/A4000 facory defaults)
- because 0x444f5301 WORKS (at least for me!)
-
- Oops! Almost forgot one SMALL detail. Don't try to reformat the
- partition with these settings. You will lock up your hard drive and
- will be forced to reboot!?!
-
- If this works for you, consider it a Christmas present from me!!!
-
- The real Christmas present will come when Commodore fixes all this mess!
