THanks to all who responded to my comments and queries regarding
Adaptec controllers and the SupraDrive 500XP.

Solution:  I had a defective DB25<-->Cent.50 cable.  One of the
           data lines missed connection in the DB25 end.

I should've known better than to trust a $3.95 cable.  Oh well.
I'll just run out to my local CompUSA and get a real MAC
cable  (maybe I'll actually get some quality control.)

I'd make teh cable myself, but the MAC cable will be cheaper
than the parts alone, I can almost guarantee.

I pulled the cable off of my  Apple //e hard disk and plugged
it betweent the SupraDrive's external connector and the Adaptec'
Header50<-->Cent.50 cable I made adn everything came to life.
formatted without error and mounted beautifully on the next re-boot.

Thanks again  (especially for putting up with a lame-brain like me.)
