- If you turn off the cache, you are in effect forcing the cpu to hit
- memory on every memory reference(instruction and data fetches). With
- it on, you sometimes will get a 'hit' which will save several memory
- cycles. With or without 32 bit memory, you will gain as much as a
- 200% increase in speed with the caches on. In fact, on my 40 Mhz
- VXL-30, I got a 14.5 rating from MIPS versus a 5.6 rating, almost a
- factor of 300% with cache enabled(I have 2 mbs 32 bit memory). The
- 32 bit memory speeds up the system over all by as much as 400 %, but
- on top of that you still get improvements with cache enabled.
