  15. Let us say that in a moment of perfect brain dead stupidty
  16. a person (the author) while fabricating a four pin power
  17. supply cable for a disk drive, reversed the locations of
  18. the +12 volt and +5 volt connectors.  Let's also take as
  19. a given that this perfect null {} set moment lasted until
  20. after that power was applied and the pop was heard followed
  21. by the familiar smell of naplam in the morning air.

  23. Oops, sorry I had a flashback... I meant to say smell of
  24. burnt electronics wafting through the air.  After the smoke
  25. and expletives are cleared from the room and calm has returned
  26. and some small semblance of a brain is booted in the head of
  27. our intrepid sorftware engineer (masquarading as a hardware
  28. Eng.) decides to open the electronics section of this drive
  29. unit hoping to find something repairable.  Alas, nothing
  30. looks as though it could be removed and replaced with a
  31. paper clip, jumper wire, and neither superclue nor a wedge
  32. appear to be appropriate solutions.

  34. I'm going to go out on a limb here and suggest that perhaps
  35. the windings on the stepper motor that drives the head
  36. assembly is toasted.  So the burning questions is - has
  37. this sort of accident ever happened before and can the unit
  38. be repaired, or am I now the proud owner of a 375 dollar
  39. paperweight?

  41. All ideas are welcome.  After all the ranting and raving that
  42. I've already done I can laugh at just about anything.  While
  43. laughing may not help any more than crying or shouting it is
  44. a lot less rough on the body and soul than self-flagellation.
