- Hello,
-
- Let us say that in a moment of perfect brain dead stupidty
- a person (the author) while fabricating a four pin power
- supply cable for a disk drive, reversed the locations of
- the +12 volt and +5 volt connectors. Let's also take as
- a given that this perfect null {} set moment lasted until
- after that power was applied and the pop was heard followed
- by the familiar smell of naplam in the morning air.
-
- Oops, sorry I had a flashback... I meant to say smell of
- burnt electronics wafting through the air. After the smoke
- and expletives are cleared from the room and calm has returned
- and some small semblance of a brain is booted in the head of
- our intrepid sorftware engineer (masquarading as a hardware
- Eng.) decides to open the electronics section of this drive
- unit hoping to find something repairable. Alas, nothing
- looks as though it could be removed and replaced with a
- paper clip, jumper wire, and neither superclue nor a wedge
- appear to be appropriate solutions.
-
- I'm going to go out on a limb here and suggest that perhaps
- the windings on the stepper motor that drives the head
- assembly is toasted. So the burning questions is - has
- this sort of accident ever happened before and can the unit
- be repaired, or am I now the proud owner of a 375 dollar
- paperweight?
-
- All ideas are welcome. After all the ranting and raving that
- I've already done I can laugh at just about anything. While
- laughing may not help any more than crying or shouting it is
- a lot less rough on the body and soul than self-flagellation.
-
- Regards,
- -mjw-
