- What is the Visualization Industry?
-
-
- The Visualization Industry is the multi-disciplinary trade
-
- integrating multi-media, simulation, telecommunications and
-
- 3D computing services and product suppliers. This industry
-
- is a combination of traditional and cutting-edge services
-
- and products that are seeking to address a growing market
-
- demand. Visualization provides the user with real-time
-
- interaction between data, audio-visual and other users.
-
-
-
- What is The Visualization Industry Standards
-
- Association(VISA)?
-
-
-
- VISA is an international organization of business entities
-
- and associations with a business interest in the
-
- Visualization Industry.
-
-
-
- What are VISA's goals?
-
-
-
- * Standards: VISA supports "V1" Industry standards which
-
- emphasize enhanced, immediate and cohesive growth of the
-
- industry. V1 standards are an agreement to port or configure
-
- existing hardware, software and communications standards on
-
- an industry-wide basis. Standards groups include: File
-
- formats, Hardware connections, Terminology definitions and
-
- Communications protocols. Existing standards are deployed in
-
- V1 as the preferred Standards Set.
-
-
-
- * Effective media: VISA seeks to coordinate media awareness
-
- of the industry. By example: to help in separating hype from
-
- hope and glitz from reality. VISA will seek to make sure
-
- that all the avenues of the technology are covered in
-
- stories being prepared for release.
-
-
-
- * Networking and postings: VISA seeks to make the industry
-
- aware of suppliers and their resources within the industry.
-
-
-
- Membership: Membership is open to all and is currently free.
-
- Dues are expected to be initiated mid-1993. Membership
-

- WANTED: Information on software for simulating
-
- i) the dynamics of contacting/impacting bodies (rigid or elastic), and/or
- ii) the nearest distance between moving bodies (e.g. nearest points and
- closest distance between two convex sets).
-
- The particular application I'm interested in is the motion simulation
- of a multi-link robot, with flexible links, as it comes into contact
- with objects in the environment; the software would be used to validate
- existing software, which in turn is being used to support the design
- of robots for the Space Station.
-
- Even if your software has a limited capability, I would like to hear from you.
- Please respond via Email (or telephone); if there is sufficient interest, I'll
- compile the responses and post them later.

- I am considering developing a simulation of a database system that would be
- accessed by users all over the US. I am interested in developing cost
- estimates for the proposed system, especially personnel costs. The system
- would have some significant, but currently unknown, personnel costs.
-
- My first step was to do a literature search. I initially limited the search to
- such keywords as "database," "simulation," "information retrieval," etc. I
- found nothing useful. I have talked to a couple of people who are expert at
- either simulation or DBMS (but not both) - they were not surprised that I came

-
- Do you have any references or insights that would be useful. I have already
- posted to comp.databases.

- Hi,
-
- I have been CSIM (the process-oriented simulator from MCC) and was wondering
- if anyone had tried to have some storage for a facility.
-
- For example, if a real disk is simulated, one would like to keep tabs on the
- storage space available on the disk (in CSIM parlance a facility).
-
- Any clues ?
-
- \deepak
-
- \PS Another question I had was that for the disk the following are the problems
- modelling :
-
- a. Service time is not independent. [ The position of the disk head
- impacts the service time.
-
- b. Inter arrival time is never exponential (in realistic situations).
- Does anyone have a suggestion for a better scheme of request
- generation ?
-
- Does anyone have any thoughts about this problem ?

- COMPUTER ARCHITECTURE SIMULATION
-
- Since the beginning of electronic computers, computer architecture
- simulation technology has been the most critical(and often invisible)
- engine that moves the whole computer industry forward, generations
- after generations.
-
- Computer Architects rely on simulation tools to explore different architectural
- alternatives and design tradeoffs. Computer System Vendors need to
- access architecture simulation tools 9 to 12 months before the arrival of
- the real processor samples, so that they can ship out system products when
- the processor is generally available. Computer architecture simulation tools
- are also valuable to university students and professors for their research and
- instruction activities.
-
- The purpose of this special issue is to provide a common place for reporting
- the advance of the state of the art in the computer architecture
- simulation technology. Specific topics of interest include, but are not
- limited to:
-
- o. Computer architecture simulation techniques
-
- * Efficient methods for fast architecture simulation
- * Cycle-by-cycle-accurate architecture simulation
- * Techniques for fast retargeting architecture simulation
- * Efficient I/O system simulation techniques
- * Efficient TLB/cache/memory system simulation techniques
- * Efficient graphic system simulation techniques
-
- o. Program trace collection and processing techniques
-
- * Hardware-based techniques
- * Software-based techniques
- * Architecture support for tracing
- * Trace reduction/compression techniques
- * Trace selection and validation techniques.
-
- o. Applications using computer architecture simulators
-
- * Program execution profilers/monitors
- * Computer system simulation
- * Multiprocessor system simulation
-
- o. Update on building projects in industry and academia.

- PRACTICAL, DISTRIBUTED AND PARALLEL SIMULATION
- _____________________________________________________________
-
- Computer simulation is being used to solve problems of
- increasing size and complexity over an ever expanding range
- of applications. To meet these challenges, the simulations
- are often executed on multiple processor systems ranging from
- shared memory computers, to clusters of workstations, to
- distributed memory multiprocessors.
-
- Papers are sought from practioners and researchers solving
- large-scale, practical simulation problems using multiple
- processor systems. Papers should stress the practical
- aspects of the work, what is novel about the approach, how it
- expands the application and use of simulation, and the
- lessons learned from the projects.
-
- Relevant types of simulation include, but are not limited to:
-
- SIMNET
- Training simulation
- Distributed Interactive Simulation
-
- Real time simulation
- Heterogenous computing systems
- Hardware-in-the-loop simulation
-
- Virtual reality
- Decision support systems
-
- Relevant application areas include, but are not limited to:
-
- Communication systems
- Telecommunication systems
- Transportation systems
- Military systems
- Financial applications
- Environmental systems
- Computational biology, chemistry, and physics
-
- Other relevant topics include synchronization methods,
- scalability, programming languages, performance studies, and
- visualization.
