- Can a degausser be used on a hard drive? Is it effective?
- Too effective? That is, would it render the drive unusable.
-
- Would it interfere with the ability of a SCSI drive to do a
- low-level format?
-
- Any other ways to achieve the same end without largely destroying
- the value of the hardware?
-
- Motivation:
-
- One may have a drive to be disposed of but no longer a (convenient)
- way to hook it up to a system to erase data or format it. Another
- situation is where the drive has gone bad (maybe just the electronics)
- and the dealer will swap it for another. Your drive may get sold as
- a refurbished drive or "as is" for a hacker to repair and enjoy.
