- I know that this article is probably not in response to anything I
- wrote, but it brings up a topic related to one I mentioned.
-
- In a previous article, I mentioned that I felt that GNU was one of the
- few truly `open' systems. It wasn't because it was free, it was
- because many Unix vendors feel the need to add `enhancements' to their
- OS products that have the effect of creating subtle (and not-so-subtle)
- incompatibilities between the different systems. IMHO, this makes them
- no longer very `open' in any meaningful sense. Cost per se has nothing
- to do with it, other than providing an incentive for the practice. The
- GNU people at least don't add gratuitous incompatibilities for such
- reasons; plus the source code is available (not true of many other
- vendors, even for a license fee).
-
- Now as to whether `open' == `good', that's an entirely different
- question. Many people seem to think so, but have a confused idea of
- what `open' is. It certainly is not true that `open' == `Unix', as
- my previous article tried to make clear (problems with various Unix
- implementations). I think the main question is whether the system
- solves the customer's needs, which after all is what we use these
- things for anyway.
