- Of course, if they came out with an inexpensive CD-ROM drive then we wouldn't
- be disillusioned at all-- we'd be happy that we didn't have to swap all those
- floppies, worry about someone or something accidently erasing or overwriting
- them, etc. I figure ther is a lot of money being made on CD-ROM drives (well,
- a lot per drive, anyway-- maybe not a lot total due to the present miniscule
- size of the market). The basic mechanical part of the drive is available for
- < 100$ (as a quick perusal of the audio section of your favorite superstore
- will convince you). Actually that would get you not just the mechanical part
- but the mechanics, the laser diode, and the drive control electronics, the
- basic digital read electronics-- everything before the DAC's in an audio player
- would be useful. The remainder shouldn't really cost that much compared to
- DAC's and two halfway decent analog amplification channels. So when will we
- see affordable drives?
