  12. THIS IS NOT AN OFFICIAL IBM ANNOUNCEMENT

  14. IBM Boca has released OS/2 2.1 beta last Friday to internal IBMers.
  15. This is a wide beta release, and is to be given out to customers after
  16. 12/28/92.  The major ISVs will receive their copy first before external
  17. customers do.  If you know an IBM SE, he or she may be able to give you
  18. a demo as early as next week.

  20. No official announcement has been made, but I expect this to be formally
  21. announced in the coming week.  Expect a version of this beta code to be
  22. available on CD also.

  24. The beta consists of 29 disks.  Install disk, disk 1-19, 5 printer
  25. driver disks (I saw LaserJet 4 drivers), 2 display driver disks, and 2
  26. for MMPM/2 (including Sound Blaster/Sound Blaster Pro drivers).

  28. I have this installed over the weekend.  So far, everything looks
  29. essentially like 2.0 except the WPS is now coming up and shutting down a
  30. lot faster.  Only WinOS2 3.1 is provided in this release.  WinOS2 setup
  31. now has a radio button to explicitly turn on Enhanced mode support.  So
  32. far I haven't been able to get WinRIX to work with my 8514 Ultra under
  33. Enhanced mode (I was able to launch DOS AND OS/2 app from within WinOS2
  34. 3.1, however).  Perhaps I'll retest it under SuperVGA mode.  To 8514
  35. users: the annoying mouse cursor blotching problem is gone, switching
  36. between OS/2 desktop and WinOS2 full screen will restore mouse cursor
  37. properly at full video speed.  Palette in WinOS2 is restored also, so
  38. apps like CorelDraw and PageMaker will work correctly after a screen
  39. switch.  No seamless 8514 driver yet, however, SYSTEM.INI does reference
  40. to a seamless 8514 driver (swin8514.drv).  There is also a FAX/PM applet
  41. provided by Microformatic.  I have no FAX modem to test this, but from
  42. what I gathered, it is limited to FAXing a one page document.
