- I was able to get ahold of FutureComm, who I have previously mentioned as
- being another source of the XGA clone board for the ISA bus. The salesperson
- said they estimate the price will be (single quantity) $350. The expected
- availability will be in febuary 1993.
- Apparently the holdup (according to FutureComm) is that INMOS, the maker of
- the chipset, is coming out with the final version soon. The presently
- available chipset consists of 3 chips, the two XGA chips as go into the MCA
- version, plus an add on AT controller chip which is actually an adapter
- to glue these chips to the AT ISA bus. The final version will be just 2 chips,
- with the ISA control functions built in. The present version is said to not
- be completely reliable on the ISA, the final version will be.
- They also mentioned a third chip set, from IIT corp, but said that it was
- not %100 percent XGA compatible. More details will surely follow.
-
- My own opinion:
-
- Comparing XGA to already available and reliable alternatives such as the S3
- chips, the $500 price is simply not justfied. Sure, the people who are
- deperate to get os/2 to run propery will buy the card at that price, but that
- is a limited market.
