- }Please be a little more precise. IBM has NEVER laid anyone off. Truthfully,
- }the early retirement plan that they offer is VERY attractive. Also, the
- }whole point of their doing this is to make the company leaner (get rid of
- }some of that famous IBM beauracracy). Personally, I think that it's a

- I've heard that IBM has never laid anyone off -- it may still be true,
- I can't say of my own knowledge. However, IBM has engaged in RIFs
- (Reductions In Force) through early retirement and voluntary separation
- programs which provide substantial severence pay. A report of IBM's
- plans to reduce their workforce by 25,000 next year was characterized
- by IBM as "hopefully" voluntary... which I take to mean that IBM hopes
- to reduce the force through incentive programs, but that they will
- reduce the force. This is a lot better than what ITT did to me and my
- collegues: they just closed and let us all go. I'd rather be offered
- money to leave voluntarily... of course, I'm confident of my ability to
- find another job, so a big slug of cash and a new job would be a pretty
- good deal. As a contractor, however, I have never had access to any
- of the RIF programs here at AT&T.
