- A couple of days ago, I posted an article asking for help on Win 3.1.
- My problem was that I could not finetune memory management and that, because of
- mem management problems --or so I suspected-- Win was acting up on me: 1 out of
- 6 or 7 times it would hang up on exiting...
- Basically, people told me to i) use qemm 6.0 or later (earlier
- versions are not compatible with Win), ii) that I dont need to use
- emm386.sys since Win needs extended mem and not expanded, iii) even if I
- use emm386 and/or himem.sys to use the versions that came with the Win
- package, and iv) to use smartdrive in the autoexec.bat. Some personal
- comments: Now, I DO use the new himem.sys and I 've done away with emm386
- and qemm (it was v5.0), and from time to time the system hangs on exit
- from Win. Yesterday I got a new kinder and gentler problem: I could not run DOS
- apps.. The whole mess seems to have started when I got a data error
- while unzipping a file in the DOS prompt: suddenly I got a DOS error 11
- (whtever that means), ProgMan __QUIT__ and I was left looking at my desktop...
- How's that for weird? After that every time I tried to run a DOS prog I got
- the DOS error 11 prompt... After some searching I found out that the
- winoa386.mod file in the windows/system dir had been modified, so I unpacked
- the original file from the Win installation disks, and reconfigured almost
- all .pif files... Now I _can_ run DOS apps, but the system is very unstable:
- Telix 3.2 for DOS hang up while running thru Windows and hang the entire system
- as well... O.K. netlanders, I am bummed! Any ideas??? I will appreciate any
- input on the subject... I am suspecting that for some reason Win was unstable
- to begin with and memory management has little or nothing to do with it...but
- I am willing to give any wild guess/idea a shot... I am using a 486DX33 w/
- 4 MB mem and a Trident SVGA 1MB card....
- Thanx in advance...
