  11. Version 1.90 of SunOS Minix (a beta release of SunOS Minix 2.0) is now
  12. available via anonymous ftp from csc.canterbury.ac.nz in the UNIX
  13. directory in the file smx_1_90.tar_z (you should rename your copy
  14. smx_1_90.tar.Z before decompressing).

  16. Note that SunOS Minix version numbers are independent of Minix version
  17. numbers - SunOS Minix 1.0 was based on Mac Minix 1.5.10.1; non-mac
  18. specific fixes from Mac Minix 1.5.10.7 have been incorporated into
  19. SunOS Minix version 1.9.

  21. New features included in SunOS Minix 1.9 are:

  23. 1. Operates on Sun 3s as well as SPARC-based Suns (Sun 3 port by
  24. Bill Bynum (bynm@cs.wm.edu)).

  26. 2. Memory protection that operates at three levels: none (same as SunOS
  27. Minix 1.0), partial (text segments are not writable, free memory is
  28. totally inaccessible) and total (well, very nearly total). Partial
  29. protection is the default - full protection results in too much
  30. overhead for routine use.

  32. 3. Several minor bug fixes.

  34. We plan to release version 2.0 of SunOS Minix sometime in February,
  35. and welcome feedback on version 1.9 (to sunos-minix@cosc.canterbury.ac.nz).
  36. Version 1.9 is distributed in the same form as version 1.0 - as a set of
  37. diffs to Minix 1.5 for the PC or the Mac.  When we release version 2.0 we
  38. may also provie an upgrade path from SunOS minix 1.0 (if there is any
  39. demand for it).
