- I've tried this before, but no replies, so here goes again... Surely somebody
- must have a clue of what is going on... :-)
-
- When I start X (startx) with a kernel greater than 98.5, it just won't
- fire up properly. It goes into the right mode and fills the screen with the
- normal X pattern. But then something weird happens. It reverts to text mode
- for a split second, and then fills the screen with the X pattern again. This
- happens 3 times, and then I'm left staring at the X background pattern. I have
- control over the X pointer, but if I press any key, all I get is a beep. Presistant
- pressing of Ctrl-Alt-Backspace will eventually (after a lot of beeps) kill off the
- server.
-
- Starting xdm gives more or less the same startup, but here I get the login-box after
- a while (and a small console window in the lower corner). But when trying to type
- something in, I get _mostly_ beeps and no character on screen. The funny thing is,
- sometimes (1 in 10 say) I get the character I pressed displayed. With a little
- patience I am then able to log in and get a few xterms up. But the problem is exactly
- the same here, lots of beeps and very few characters.
-
- This started to happen when I upgraded to 98.6, and has been persistent ever since,
- all the way up to (and including 99.1). If I start up with a 98.5 kernel everything
- is fine...
-
-
- Help... Any hints on what could be the problem or what I could do to try to trace
- it is greatly appreciated!
