- : I agree with you, Louis, but I think things are going to
- : change. Here's why:
- :
- : 1. Coherent seems to be on a fast track into a fully
- : capable os suitable for biz.
-
- Fiddle-sticks!
- I am a professional systems manager (VMS, UNIX, heterogenous
- networks) for more than a decade now. A COH' system would never
- have a chance to get integrated into a system environment that I
- have to manage, since COH' always proves to be unreliable.
- I'd really wonder if other professionals would do.
-
- Those MWC crew has no notion of 'reliability' and 'quality'.
- The quirks that I revealed in the V4-release are just ridiculous
- and make it obvious (I can proove it!), that 'testing' is not on the
- check-list at MWCs'. That's why I called COH' "banana software"
- (gets ripe at customers site) recently.
- Customers are a cheap testing suite - seemingly.
-
- Anyway, COH' is a toy but not a work-base. At the moment one starts
- to take it serious, COH' proves to be overstrained.
-
- The worst of all is, that MWC delivers an OPERATING SYSTEMS with a
- damaged DISK DRIVER!
-
- : [ ... ]
- : 3. I believe that the market for 3rd party stuff for Coherent
- : has yet to take shape. There is a need for a forum where 3rd
- : parties can advertise. As far as I can tell, the net is the only
- : effective way to reach any substantial numbers Coherent users.
- : With the 'netiqeutte' demands for no ads, it must be really hard
- : to get a Coherent application to market. A forum will emerge
- : because there will be advertiser demand.
-
- Advertizers might pour out their stuff in the 'biz'-hierarchy, as
- SCO does in 'biz.sco' and DIGITAL EQUIPMENT CORPORATION (DEC) does
- in 'biz.dec'. I DON'T wanna see 'commercials' here!
-
-
- : 4. With the addition of X and TCP/IP "set for early '93", Coherent
- : will reach a position of competing with most USL systems in capability.
-
- Nice speculation!
- I will _CHECK_ it amongst my 3 home systems (SCO, COH' and DOS with
- SUNs PC-NFS) - then we'll see ...
- From what I already saw from MWCs work-bench, I'd expect just another
- mess ... and just nice dreams wont drive a hardware.
-
-
- : [ ... ]
- : 7. A strong marketing blitz from MWC after X & TCP/IP are stable
- : could explode sales.
-
- There is only ONE chance for MWC to rule over stuff like 'LINUX' and
- '386BSD' - that chance spells: Q_U_A_L_I_T_Y, since this is an
- option that MWC really has, compared with other Wanna-Be-Unices.
-
-
-
- : I buy books from a small computer store nearby. The guy who runs the
- : store asked me the other day..
- : "I keep hearing about this Coherent. Do you think I
- : ought to stock it?"
- : No small neighborhood computer shop is going to ask that about USL
- : based operating systems.
-
- He, he - what a nice joke!
- Of course you wont get a "hot-dog" in a decent restaurant and the
- NASA does not produce fireworks rockets ...
-
- ... and COH' is not a Sys-V but a self-knotted V7 with a few Sys-V
- features ...
-
