- I will admit that I do get the 'lost packets' error on occasion, although
- primarily it is just when dealing with my feed from UUPSI, which seems to
- go to sleep frequently : RD on my modem goes steady for a while, and then
- goes off for 5-8 seconds, and then starts up again; sometimes, if it sleeps
- for 10 seconds or more, Coherent gives up and I get the 'lost packets' error.
- However, first, I did get a uusecure patch a few months ago (unless there are
- two revisions to the uusecure patch), and second, I am not convinced that the
- problem is Coherent's. I transfer on average 500K nightly with a Xenix system,
- and periodically large transfers with a couple of other systems here without
- seeing that error, unless there is a real problem (like the other side hangs
- up).
-
- From what I can tell, the 'lost packets' seems to be a catch-all error meaning
- 'I lost connection to the other side and can't re-synchronize'. (BTW - a friend
- of mine, who also has a UUPSI connection, has DOS sofware that is a bit more
- creative .... it prints "I'm bored ..." when this happens). Although the
- original UUCP that came with 4.0.0 did have a bug and this error occured
- much more frequently (like at the drop of a hat ... any hat !) I am not
- sure that getting this infrequently on a post-uusecure-patch Coherent
- is necessarily a problem.
-
- (BTW - even with occasional problems, I am able to transfer slightly over
- 1MB of news daily with UUPSI)
-
- Regards,
-
- Dave.
