- Here's the situation:
-
- * Small office with about 10 Novell users & 1 Unix hack (Yours Truly).
-
- * 386 mail gateway: AT&T Unix v3.2.1 + Wollongong TCP/IP. Connected via
- UUCP to UUNET.
-
- * Novell network + Charon IPX gateway + Pegasus mail.
-
- Object: to provide mail connectivity from Novell to the Universe Beyond.
-
- What I've done so far:
-
- (1) Had used Smail successfully on the Unix box alone for a couple of years,
- but for some reason it doesn't speak SMTP correctly to Charon.
- I think there must be some interference between Smail and some of the
- Wollongong stuff, because I know Smail works in other situations
- (have seen it work myself, in fact) & got some e-mail from the author
- about this. I don't know very much about the little tcp daemons and what
- they do, if they expect a "real sendmail", etc.
-
- (2) Turned off smail & put back the Wollongong sendmail. Works OK using
- a generic sendmail.cf talking with Charon.
-
- I go blind looking at sendmail syntax, so got Ease and
- de-compiled the .cf file into Ease-ish, compiled it back into a new
- sendmail.cf. Result: Wollongong sendmail goes nuts and grows without bound,
- using all swap space in the system, and not having source I have no way to
- debug it.
-
- (3) Got IDA sendmail from the net & spent the afternoon tweaking it (where
- is Larry Wall when I need him?) to run in this environment. Crashes, but noticed
- as I was leaving this evening that I'd made a mistake setting up GNU DBM.
- I don't know if that's the whole of the problem, but I seriously doubt it.
-
- My current plan is to:
-
- (1) Try another more compatible DBM library (and/or fix up GDBM) with IDA
- sendmail, and generally goof around with it for a while and see if I can
- make it work.
-
- (2) Try stripping the comments out of a sendmail.cf generated by Ease, and
- go back to Wollongong's sendmail.
-
- (3) Take another look at Smail, try understanding its interaction with the
- daemons and try debugging the SMTP session between it and Charon "by hand".
-
- But: I'm really willing to listen to any advice you have to give!
- Anybody have a similar setup & see anything obvious I should be doing here
- that I've missed?
-
- Thanks in advance, a whole bunch.
