This could be due to one of two problems, 2.3 didn't like nulls in the
mailbox, or 2.3's locking methods don't agree with the locking methods in
use by your MTA at that site.  I'd suggest upgrading to 2.4 and setting
all the relevant locking methods.  (2.4 tolerates nulls in the box and
uses multiple locking schemes)

With 2.3 and a NFS mounted spool that expects lockf/fcntl locking yup, upgrade
to 2.4.
