Well, after some detective work I found the catopen() call, buried in
src/elm.c and found that the catalog basename was *hardcoded* to
"elm2.4".  I also found that all message catalogs should be 'gencat'-ed
to one big file (elm2.4.cat).  Now elm2.4 finds his file but (at least
sometimes) displays both the wanted message *plus* the default message
string...  The work continues.

I think the name of the .cat file should be configurable instead of hardcoded.
