- I don't know about this particular issue but there are some other issues
- of importance concerning the Ultra+ and Ultra-Pro:
-
- 1) They aren't to be found yet. I've been trying to get my hands on one
- for 2 months now. Have 3 companies looking. Even called the "direct"
- dealer that ATI suggested on the phone. Other than Gateway, no one has them
- in stock. The reason is that ATI signed a large deal (almost 8 figures in
- US$) to supply Gateway with VLbus versions and has let the rest of the
- market go onto the back burner for a while--understandable, I guess.
-
- 2) Both cards have internal 64 bit data paths and do 1280x1024x256. To
- reduce the cost, the Ultra+ uses fast DRAM instead of the VRAM found on
- the Ultra Pro. The speed difference is apparently not that great, though.
- Disappointingly, the Ultra+ runs its 1280x1024 mode interlaced, as the
- DRAM throughput isn't high enough for non-interlaced operation. Note,
- however, that your monitor must be able to handle 1280x1024, interlaced
- or not, in order to use this mode. Needless to say, 1280x1024 NI monitors
- are not cheap!
-
- Both cards are otherwise identical. They have some amazing hardware
- capabilities which were not heretofore found on anything less than high end
- unix workstation video controllers. Unfortunately for us developers, the
- details are proprietary and confidential and not easily accessed from ATI..
- If you want to see a machine running the UltraPro, and doing a very good
- job, even with WinDoze, try the Gateway 486/66V. Zowie. Depending upon
- who wrote the video driver, WinDoze may not even fully utilize the hardware
- acceleration offered by this card.
