  24. I use external modems because I want to be able to move them around easily
  25. between systems, attach them to intellingent serial controllers (i.e. not COM
  26. port) and non PC systems. An external modem is more futureproof. I can also put
  27. a line monitor between the modem and PC to see what's actually going down the
  28. line (try that with an internal modem!) :-)

  30. Trying to use more than 2 COM ports at once is generally trouble because the PC
  31. wasn't designed for it. You may well have to disable a serial port if you
  32. install an internal modem anyway to prevent a conflict.

  34. However that just suits my circumstances. Internal modems are generally cheaper,
  35. don't take up extra desk space and as long as they come with a 16550A UART are
  36. a good choice for most people.
