- I've never seen a 16-bit dumb serial card. The $400+ intelligent
- (coprocessed) multiserial cards come in 16-bit versions, and you can get
- serial I/O built into a super I/O cards that has a 16-bit interface for an IDE
- adapter, but UARTs are 8-bit devices and don't profit from 16-bit cards.

- To get the most data through with the least connect time, transfer it in
- compressed form (.ZIP or whatever). Even a 14.4 kbps modem doesn't need
- higher than 19200 bps to get the best ZMODEM throughput possible on
- precompressed files.

- The 16550 should help your PC live with higher DTE rates, but that will
- onbly make a difference when sending uncompressed info such as text.
