- This is a summary of the many replies I received when I asked for help on
- whether to get a leased or a private line.
-
- Many thanks to:

- jgardner@nyx.cs.du.edu (Jay Gardner)
- Toby Nixon <tnixon@hayes.com>
- John Adams <jadams@vixen.cc.bellcore.com>
- Greg Andrews from Telebit.
- ...And anyone else that I forgot to mention :-)
-
-
- All of whom advised that the Private line would work fine for what I wanted
- to do with it.
-
- Transcripts of the thread are available if anyone wants them.
-
- Anyway I opted for a PLNA circuit with automatic ringdown at both ends.
- So far it has worked without a hitch. All I needed to do was make minor
- changes to one of my UUCP config files, to remove the dial sequence, and
- set the modem to do a blind dial.
-
-
- I learned quite a bit about the 'lingo' used in in telecommunications, and
- I met a lot less resistance once I spoke their language. The installers were
- also quite pleasant to work with (after I fixed 'em up with coffee and
- doughnuts :-), and they made sure that I had a clean line with a -10.1 dBm
- power limit (I'm still not up on all these terms - I have heard it referenced
- as power limit and loss?).
- These guys have put in over 100 hours this week due to the severe storm
- that hit this part of the country - gotta give them credit :-)
-
- The cost is very modest. All I had to invest in was one more Telebit
- T2500 modem, plus the installation charges for the private line, which came
- out to less than $900.
-
-
- Thanks again to everyone who sent me replies!
