- Recently a friend wanted advice on getting a cheap modem, and I
- recommended getting one with 2400 bps, V.42bis and MNP5. I checked
- Computer Shopper, and found a ZOOM AMC for only $46 that had
- what we wanted. He already has a fax machine, and does not
- want fax.
-
- The modem came the other day, and guess what? Its really
- just a 2400 bps modem, but has small print below the V.42bis
- on the label that says "RPI compatible," meaning that you
- have to do your error correction and compression in
- software external to the modem! I had heard of this before,
- but didn't know that Zoom was trying to pull this scam.
-
- So I checked around and have found a number of ads from various
- mailorder places for this modem, and none of the sellers seem
- to be aware of the difference between true V.42bis and
- "RPI compatible."
-
- Now I'm wondering if I can EVER tell for sure in advance whether
- any of the cheap modems that I see advertised might just
- be plain 2400 bps, but advertised as something more.
-
- Both Telemart (the outfit we got this from) and Midwest Micro
- are carrying this modem.
-
- Anyone have any current recommendation for a cheap internal
- modem that does true V.42, V.42bis, MNP5 at 2400 bps,
- including where to buy it?
