- Database Wishlist
- -----------------
- All I want for Christmas is most of these features available at the same time.
- I'm rating the criticality from 1 (it'd be nice) to 10 (absolute must)
-
- 1) Multiplatform compatability (8)
- I need to be able to create identical applications for
- MS Windows 3.1 (10)
- Macintosh (8)
- DOS (5)
- VAX/VMS dumb terminal (7)
- X-Windows (4)
-
- Lets add something fun: For Mac, Win31 and DOS, the application must
- be portable, so that it can run on a single-user machine (9).
-
- 2) 4GL-level of power. Even if a 3GL (or xBase-like) is generated, I don't
- want to worry about the fact that a screen field generates what part of
- a dynamic SQL statement (9). Once I paint a screen, and indicate which
- fields are which, I shouldn't have to worry myself over commit phase
- coding either.
-
- 3) Subforms, not spreadsheets! (9)
- There are a few database systems (Approach, Paradox, Helix Express) which
- permit a repeating subform to be placed onto another form, to show several
- lines of data about each record in a one-to-many relationship. A
- spreadsheet interface makes it easier to compare one record to another, but
- it is not always possible to show all data at once, or there may be a
- 120-character description field for each record.
-
- 4) Reports that permit one-to-many-of-these-and-many-of-those relationships (8)
- In a clinical trial for new drug development, there are events tied to
- a patient visit, such as a physician's assessment, lab tests, examination,
- etc. There are also 'asynchronous' events, such as side effects, other
- medications taken, etc. It is nearly impossible in most systems to produce
- a report which has several subsections for each of these relations under
- each patient.
-
- 5) Object orientation (5). A full ODBMS would be nice (or, at least
- interesting), but I'd settle for a database with a data dictionary with
- entity definitions that can be defined in one place and used in several
- (such as patient ID's, severity codes, etc. etc.), and understand the
- links between records, not just tables to be linked at my convenience.
-
- 6) A Pocket Guide I can fit in my Christmas stocking (8). I do much of my
- development at home on a company laptop, I adjust things in demos on the
- road, and a high-quality pocket guide that's not unwieldy is awfully nice.
-
- Hairy Wristwatch!!!
-
- A Cool Yule, Dudes!!!
