- I'd gladly do this if I wasn't forced to contribute to a plan which
- the government has told me for years was for this purpose.
-
- I could save my own UI premiums, and either buy private insurance,
- or find some other way to invest the money and use it to take care of
- myself if I were unemployed.
-
- The same goes for pensions. I was overjoyed to find an employer without
- a pension plan -- this meant I could put as much or as little into a
- plan of my own choosing and custodianship as I wanted. Without being
- penalized because my employer offered a plan which I couldn't control.
- Unfortunately work with that employer led to unemployment, which brings
- us right back into the current topic!
-
- I can't afford to accept personal responsibility for my OWN misfortune
- at the same time as I'm forced to pay to cover OTHER PEOPLE's misfortunes.
- It's tough to make it work both ways.
-
- I'm not against UI, or social benefits. But the government can't have
- it's cake and eat it too. Either collective employment insurance works,
- or it doesn't. And right now I don't think it does, either BEFORE or
- AFTER the recent change.
-
- So let's call UIC premiums what they are -- a tax to cover welfare.
- That's what everybody seems to be advocating, so let's use the big,
- ugly T-word, and stop calling a spade an earth conveyance implement.
- The government wants to give out welfare payments (again, I don't
- oppose this) without calling it a tax. And it walks like a tax,
- and talks like a tax.
-
- It's not insurance.
