- : This is one of the problems w/ affirmative action--companies pat themselves
- : on the back for hiring women and minorities, while able to get away w/
- : paying them a lower salary. But you *know* Steve, that the real source
- : for this is that women in 'traditionally female' jobs make less than
- : women in 'traditionally male' jobs.
-
- Karen, we've been over this before. The "traditionally female" jobs
- may offer more generous leave policies or easier hiring and resigning
- in order that their holders can have babies. Neither you nor I have
- yet worked out how a woman can credibly commit herself, early in her
- career, to *not* having babies. As far as the affirmative action,
- because all companies are under some pressure to have "diverse" work
- forces, any company that is paying its "tokens" lower salaries will
- get exactly what it deserves. Its capable employees will be hired
- away, and it will have its tokens doing token work for token wages.
-
- What effect new job-sharing arrangements will have on the
- salaries and labor force participation of women, especially mothers,
- remains to be seen.
