- Jason, you might consider trying HPs (Hewlett Packard's) New Wave.
- Using NewWave as the windows shell presents you with files and folders
- in Mac-like style. Dragging an icon representing a file to the trashcan
- erases the file (sort of, its in the trash but you have to empty the
- trashcan for it to be gone). 32 character file names are allowed and
- in the new version (I think its 4.1) these file names can be made to
- wrap. Files can be kept in "folders" that are little folder icons and
- these can be kept in the "file cabinet." Usage of this product requires
- a severe paradigm shift though. To provide this Mac-like functionallity
- HP takes over the DOS file system and hides it from the user. A look under
- the hood (a DOS dir) shows a maze of new directories and subdirectories
- that are used by NewWave. I is VERY difficult to go manipulate files in
- your old habitual way. Some people love this, others can't stand it.
- More on the interface:
- Under NewWave you don't 1) start a program and 2) load or create a
- new file. The sequence is more like this: you 1) open the object (file)
- by mouse-clicking on its representative icon or you 1) create a new object.
- Saddly, you can't know if you like this interface until you've tried
- it. Personally, I was very impressed with it, but . . . I decided that I
- was more comfortable with Norton Desktop. NewWave may be what you are looking
- for however.
- I hope that this helps.
