- Hi,
-
- I was faced with pretty much the same problem when the dial-up line
- to our mainframe was disabled (at any rate when one of the bosses
- pocketed the modem). I've consedered a package called PC-Anywhere - you
- run a program on the host machine (the one connected to the mainframe)
- which waits for an incomming call from the machine running another part
- of the package on the remote (home-based) machine. Password protection
- is available on login to prevent prevent any joker who knows your office
- phone number from dialing up, and password protection is also provided
- on the system setup software, thus preventing anyone who is logged on
- changing defaults or login-passwords. Caller logs are also available.
-
- That's the theory, but I don't know if it actually works very well.
- I did see it working once, and it seemded to do DOS type things OK,
- but when Windows was attempted the thing to an age to load and crashed out
- at the startup bitmap. I suspect this may have been due to the host
- machine running a different VGA card at high res to the one in the
- remote machine, so if this is true you may have to stick to plain old
- vanilla VGA in all the host machine. The review I've read on it does
- state that it will run Windows, but very very slowly.
-
- I'd be interested to hear your eventual solution.
