  17. THE House special committee studying constitutional amendments
  18. yesterday agreed to propose the establishment of an independent
  19. organisation to take over responsibility for holding and supervising
  20. general elections from the Interior Ministry.

  22. Committee spokesman Pinit Charusombat said most of the committee
  23. members felt the Constitution should be amended to enable the setting
  24. up of an independent election supervision body.

  26. The organisation will assume the duties of both the Election Watchdog
  27. Commission (PollWatch) and the Interior Ministry to ensure clean and
  28. fair elections, he said.

  30. A sub-committee will be set up to work out the details.

  32. The special committee also considered the electoral system with the
  33. majority deciding they should be held under the multi-constituency
  34. system with only one MP elected for each constituency, or a
  35. one-man-one-vote system.

  37. The meeting also discussed a suitable number of MPs but could not
  38. reach a conclusion.

  40. Mr Pinit said the committee would hold a public forum on January 16
  41. similar to the "Mong Tang Moom" (Different Perspectives) television
  42. programme to sound out opinions on constitutional amendments.
