  16. FOREIGN Minister Prasong Soonsiri yesterday hit out at former prime
  17. minister Chatichai Choonhavan and his son, Kraisak, for their apparent
  18. attempt to gain political capital for their visit to Vietnam.

  20. "Anybody can go to Vietnam, but in what capacity is another matter.

  22. "If the visit is aimed at helping develop that country, that would be
  23. good. But we should not cheat them (the Vietnamese) or give them false
  24. hopes," the minister said.

  26. Sqn Ldr Prasong is scheduled to visit Vietnam on a three-day tour
  27. beginning tomorrow.

  29. Gen Chatichai has criticised Sqn Ldr Prasong for his handling of
  30. foreign affairs, particularly the conflict between Thailand and Burma
  31. over Hill 491.

  33. The Chart Pattana Party leader has also claimed that Sqn Ldr Prasong
  34. was not capable of handling the country's foreign affairs because he
  35. was not known internationally.

  37. "How can anybody know me. I have not had my assets seized," the
  38. minister said.

  40. Sqn Ldr Prasong said he believed that the news of his plan to visit
  41. Vietnam could have been leaked and this resulted in somebody else
  42. travelling to that country before him.

  44. "This is my initiative but somebody else has followed suit," Sqn Ldr
  45. Prasong said.

  47. The minister added: "Soon the father and son will know me better." He
  48. did not elaborate.

  50. Sqn Ldr Prasong said he was invited by Vietnamese Foreign Minister
  51. Nguyen Manh Cam.

  53. The minister said the purpose of his visit to the Indochinese nation
  54. was to introduce himself, to exchange views to further expand
  55. bilateral relations and to pursue other pending issues such as the
  56. fishing problems and the overlapping territorial waters.

  58. Vietnamese refugees who have been stranded in Thailand for a long time
  59. will also be discussed, Mr Prasong said.

  61. During his visit, the minister said he also is scheduled to meet with
  62. the Vietnamese president and the Communist Party secretary-general.
