-
- SYDNEY, Australia (UPI) -- Two Malaysians were sentenced to long jail terms
- Tuesday for the murder last year of renowned Australian heart surgeon Dr.
- Victor Chang.
-
- The nation was shocked when Chang, 54, who became a national hero as
- Australia's leading heart-lung transplant surgeon, was gunned down in a
- suburban street last July after a bungled extortion attempt by the two
- Malaysians. Chiew Seng Liew, 48, was sentenced to 20 years for Chang's murder
- and a further six years for unlawfully detaining Chang for financial
- advantage. Philip Choon Tee Lim, 37, was sentenced to 18 years for murder and
- a further six years for unlawful detention.
-
- Evidence at their trial showed they planned to kidnap Chang on his way to
- Sydney's St. Vincent's Hospital and extort money from him.
